Nutritional Considerations for the Colic Patient - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005

چکیده
There is limited knowledge of the benefits and complications associated with different modes of nutritional support in horses recovering from colic, and further clinical studies are required to facilitate refinement of feeding recommendations. However, there is evidence in humans and other species that protein and energy malnutrition can have deleterious effects on recovery from critical illness such as abdominal surgery and, on this basis, there is rationale for early enteral or parenteral support of horses recovering from colic surgery. The mode of nutritional support will depend on the underlying cause of colic, whether or not complications arise during convalescence, and the horse’s appetite. Although enteral feeding is the most cost effective method of nutritional support, parenteral nutrition is required for horses with ongoing intestinal dysfunction (i.e. ileus, dysmotility, gastric reflux). In horses with adequate gastrointestinal function, small and frequent feedings should be offered as soon as 12-24 hours after surgery. High quality grass hay or a low-bulk complete feed should be fed to horses recovering from large intestinal problems, while horses with small intestinal problems requiring resection and anastomosis may require soft mash or slurry diets fed for 2-4 days post-surgery, followed by a gradual reintroduction to normal diet. Long-term modification of diet is required following radical resection of the small or large intestine.

Prevalence, Demographics, and Risk Factors for Colic - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005
Colic is one of the most difficult diseases to study with epidemiologic methods due to the large number of diseases, which create the signs of colic. Making a specific diagnosis is not always possible in horses with colic; therefore classification of the simple colic is a challenge. Information about incidence, mortality, and risk factors is helpful to the clinician in making decisions about in...
متن کاملTreatment of Luminal Obstructions of the Large and Small Colon in Horses - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005
Simple luminal obstructions of the large and small colon are relatively common causes of colic in horses, and are caused by feed impaction, sand accumulation, fibrous foreign body ingestion, nonstrangulating displacements, and or enterolith formation. Many horses with large colon and small colon feed impactions respond to medical treatment, including withholding feed, administering fluid therap...
متن کاملTreatment of Gastrointestinal Obstruction – Stomach Impaction, Ileal Impaction, and Cecal Impaction - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005
Impaction of the stomach typically consists of excessive dry, fibrous ingesta, but may also be composed of ingested materials that form a mass, such as persimmon seeds or mesquite beans. Other feeds that tend to swell after ingestion, including wheat, barley, and sugar beet pulp, may also cause impaction. Furthermore, dental disease may increase the likelihood of gastric impaction because of im...
متن کاملPractical Treatment of Ileus - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005
Treatment for ileus includes decompression of the stomach, replacement of fluid and electrolyte losses with parenteral fluids, and use of a variety of prokinetic agents. However, there is disagreement as to the effects of indwelling stomach tubes on reflux, the rate of fluid replacement, and the most effective prokinetic agents to use. Therefore, this review is intended to provide a rational, s...

A 13-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse stallion developed acute onset of colic in central Georgia in October. He was found in his stall in the morning with numerous abrasions on his head. The grain and hay that he was offered the previous evening were only partially consumed. The owner witnessed him pawing at the ground. He then became recumbent and rolled. The local veterinarian was called and ...
